Dissecting the Cabal

Douglas County’s unique brand of conservatism is not a recent development. Since the early 1950s, the region has been shaped by a sustained coalition of wealthy business people, religious Christian ideologues, the Koch corporatist network of America’s Top 1%, the multi-level Republican Party, conspiratorial extremists, among others.

These groups, whether for better or worse, agree on one key point: Douglas County’s reputation as a testing ground for far-right conservative theories and programs must be preserved.

To this end, The Cabal maintains significant control and influence over the region’s political, economic, institutional, and governance structures.

This influence often proceeds without consideration for public dialogue, fairness, or equity. Importantly, the Cabal is generational and self-selecting, often enhanced by longstanding connections to external political and religious influences beyond the immediate community.

MAGA Influences

The ideologies at play include Trumpism, MAGA, dark money funding, astroturfing, evangelical nativism, and anti-government militias. There are also concerns about corruption and favoritism in local government towards affluent community members.
